To Oslo and Beyond - Norway in 3 Days

6/2/2015

I made it!
After two days of Airports (including 27 hours in JFK which I don't want to talk about), I finally made it to Oslo Norway. Between the JFK shenanigans, literally running through the Stockholm airport to make my 20 minute connection (which I somehow made, thank God), and trying to get myself situated in Oslo, I as a little tired when I got to my lodging for the night.
Marci, my AirBnB host, grew up in the Netherlands and decided to move here after one visit! I can't really blame her...The people are so nice, and the city is WONDERFULLY EASY to get around in. Even for myself, with very little public transit experience, was riding the metro and making my way around very comfortably in less than 2 hours after my flight landed (after a nice, hot shower of course).

After dropping some of my luggage in a locker at the Central station, getting cleaned up at Marci's and getting familiar with her beautiful Collie, Sidi, I was ready to go explore. I didn't have much time, as it was already almost 8 before I was ready to go and I had an early morning the next day, but I couldn't help myself! I walked the short kilometer back to the metro station and headed downtown. With a dying cell phone/map I made my way down the well-planned streets and found myself in front of the Oslo Opera House. This beautiful building has a slanted roof all the way to the sidewalk so one can walk all the way to the top to enjoy the view of the Sea and the city. I didn't have time to go up, but I will be sure to do it when I return to Oslo.
I say I didn't have time because the sun was setting. Yes, the sun was just now setting! Twilight is longer, but lasts from 10PM until 11PM when the sun actually dips below the horizon! It's a very surreal thing for someone who's never experienced it before.

i came home and promptly fell asleep in the comfy bed and was out until the mornign rose again at 4:30am!

After closing my blinds and sleeping for another hour, I woke up and prepared for the day. Packing only what I would need for the next two days in my smaller pack, I made my way to Oslo Central Station and stowed the rest of my belongings in the convenient locker for only 50NOK per day (about $8USD).

And here's where I write, presently. Somewhere between Oslo and Myrdal, on the train beginning my 24 hour excursion to the western fjords with stops at Flam, Bergen, Gudvangen, and Voss! I cannot wait!

Until next time, god morgen tak!
